Happy Sunday, 7 followers. I might have reached 8 or 9 followers over the last few weeks so a big shout out to you folks who are takin’ a chance. I hope self-iso is treating everyone well— please keep doing it. There is lots of evidence to support that this works, even if it feels like it’s not. Please, stay home if you can—> Except if you’re donating blood (they have set up appropriate social distancing measures)!

On an average day in pediatric oncology, we give 5 or 6 units of packed red blood cells to our patients. We will usually give at least a few units of platelets as well. Just for one oncology unit (which is pretty small in comparison to other areas), we need about 10 donors per day. Add in the global pandemic and the number of donations needed becomes exponential.
Red blood cells are like little cars in your blood that has a van full of oxygen molecules. If your red blood cells are low (like when you’re bleeding excessively), you can’t transport the soccer team of oxygen ions and your brain doesn’t work. They’re important. You can donate whole blood (that has red blood cells in it) every 56 days and it only takes about 30-45 mins to donate. Who doesn’t have time for that right now?
Prefer to be more unique? How about donating platelets. Platelets are the sticky glue that stops plugs the holes when you’re bleeding. Its the piece of gum that seals a leaking pipe, so to speak. Platelets are like gold for individuals who are on chemotherapy. They’re also very helpful when you’re bleeding. You can donate platelets every 14 days as well! This also takes about 30 mins. So easy!
How about plasma? You can donate this every 7 days! Plasma is needed when patients are very sick and need some immediate volume in their vessels. Think of this as filling up the water in the fish tank. The fish can’t swim without water!
Canada is such a beautifully giving community and I have never been more thankful to live in this country. Everyone wants to help and there are so many ways to do this without spending money. If you can’t donate blood because of whatever reason (there are a few broad criteria restrictions, like giving in Europe in the 80’s), share this info with your friends who might be able to donate. Here is a link to Canadian Blood Services website for more info. And if you can’t do any of this, that’s okay too. Please just stay home.

Love, Sam
